VOLUME II
.
.
If I had been able to consummate my vision, an infinite amount of empirical study would be included, or at least referenced here in Volume II of A NEW FOUNDATION FOR CIVILIZATION. This material would have supported every speculation, idea, theory, or suggestion included in VOLUME I (titled: SCIENCE OF ETHICS: A User's Guide for Modern Humans). However, for obvious reasons this was not possible. I can only hope that enough material has been presented so that the merit of this project is clear and that others will be willing to tackle whatever area captures their imagination and carry out the study, analysis, research, and integration of the data and its dissemination to the world to make known whether their efforts support, refute, or indicate that some totally different approach is needed.
VOLUME II, by and large, is a first effort to look as deeply as time, ability, and available data allow to determine how congruent all the ideas in VOLUME I are. Congruency supported by empirical evidence is the criteria of success in my mind.
One method used here is to take a seminal book with important ideas essential to a Science of Ethics and use it as a way of exploring these ideas. Key thoughts of the author of that valuable source are presented and then responded to as if this were a dialogue. This technique has been very useful for me because examining a challenging concept -- over an extended period of time, from various perspectives, repeatedly -- provides a tool for focusing thought more deeply than would otherwise be possible. Most chapters in VOLUME II use this structure though they are in various stages of assimilation.
But in some cases the seminal resources cannot be provided at this time. In these instances the reader will be referred to the seminal document and some general introductory remarks provided. However, the reader would do well to go to the original source in all cases to better understand what is being discussed. At least in some cases what I'm saying may be misleading without the original material.
In an ideal world my responses would then be answered by the author so they would have a chance to clarify their own thinking and meaning. At the same time reader's comments, criticisms, suggestions, offers to help are warmly solicited. This kind of back and forth is necessary in order to move discussion significantly forward.
Material is still in the process of being edited, prepared, and transferred to VOLUME II. If you have a particular interest in anything not yet available, let me know and I will give it special attention. Originally this project was focused on creating a Science of Religion. That goal has been replaced with seeing this more narrowly as a Science of Ethics.
